What is the scanner make and model? Many scanners do not uninstall properly and require the user to edit the Registry and remove left over files on the C drive (if the install was made using all the default settings).

I've been aware of the 'Scanner not found' problem since the Windows 98 days. The old HP officially sanctioned workaround used to be to unplug the AC power, wait about 60 seconds, plug it back in, pray, then try to scan, and if that didn't work, repeat the process again, and again, etc.
Download the manual (if you don't already have it) from ftp://12.145.38.159/scanner/manuals/5000_5300_series/english.pdf
Uninstall the printer software again in Add/Remove programs, then Registry Editor (Start--Run--Regedit) and search for each instance of 'mirascan' (Edit--Find). Each time you find an entry, click File--Export and send it where you can find it later just in case (maybe the Desktop), then right-click on the entry and delete it from the Registry.
When finished in the Registry, locate the Mirascan folder on the C drive (assuming you accepted the default location originally) and delete any Mirascan folder either in the root of C or under the Program Files folder.
Then read page 112 of the scanner manual and follow its instructions (steps 1 & 2 are important). Hope all goes well.
